Welcome Newcomers! For whatever reason, you've decided to join the world of Albion. It is a rich and exciting place, but can seem overwhelming if you don't know what you're doing or looking for. This I write with my knowledge from the first beta and specifics may change on the launch of the final beta. I will attempt to give you better understanding of what the first minutes of your game play may be like.
First, after you create your character, there will be a message at the bottom of your screen to help guide you. 'Beginner Wood Gatherer - Gather 3 Rough Logs.' Will be the very first one. So how do you get these? Well, there will be several trees around. You just walk up and click one of them. You'll see a 'Gathering Bar' fill up and a 'Recourse Node Bar' deplete. After which the message '+15 Fame' and '1 Rough Log' will scroll above your head. This tells you that you've successfully harvested the node and are ready for new action. After you complete that mission, the next will have you gather some stone. You'll see it as gray chunks of- well stone sitting around. There will be many more of these missions up until you get the Novice Training complete.
Now, if you've done some research and got an idea for what you want to go for, that's fine. I can tell you that, to begin with, equipment will be extremely expensive until a few days into the Final Beta. Even if you don't want to gather or craft, you can do so pretty easily up to T3 Armor and Weapons. That is what I recommend you do to begin with: Craft up to the T3 gear you'll want then grind out if Combat Experience is your goal. It may take you a little while to get to T4 gear and by then it may be available from some in-guild crafters, or on the market. I, personally, during the start ill be focusing on Gathering primarily, and Crafting when I see the chance. I'll be crafting my own gear, which will be Cloth armor and Crossbows, as well as all other armors and a few select weapons.
So, you'll have some gear to work with temporarily, now you need to know what to fight. There will be Foxes, Wolves, Bandits, etc. I highly recommend (safely) farming the bandits since there will be a higher concentration of them and they (used to) drop silver pretty regularly. It may be good to group up as well. I'm sure there will be people within the guild fame grinding immediately. As it was, the more people, the faster you killed things, but also the more the fame was spread out. Groups of 3 seemed to work best for fame grinding in highly condensed areas, otherwise groups of 2. Whatever you do, always take out the ranged mobs first. Some of the Spellcasters can heal, making the fight longer and potentially more dangerous. The Archers can do quite a bit more damage to you than the melees can. And please, when functioning in a group, do not run away from help if you found yourself low on health. Chances are if you stop attacking and guide any mobs to your allies, they can soak up aggro and damage while you secure yourself again. This is all cresting into PvE tactics, but basically: don't run around like a chicken with its head cut off. If you're working with a more experienced guild member, let them coach the situation and take the lead.
We want the biggest head-start above anyone else, true? There will be plenty of other guilds, the surviving ones from the last beta and new alike. There will be a lot of fighting over resources around the starting town, I imagine. Resources include gathering nodes AND mobs. I'm not sure if they'll change it, but the player/group with the most damage on the mob will receive the bulk of the fame and the items drop, if any. Unless changed, at tier 3 an archer with cloth armor will outdamage any other set up at that point in progression, so if possible have one of these characters in your group. That is, if you intend to vie for control of mobs to fame grind. Alternatively, you could just go further away from the starting maps, but that sacrifices time. Going to and returning from with your goods, if any. It's a judgement call, really. If there are just too many players/groups where you're trying to grind up, move.
This may be updated if I think there's more relevant information to add.
